Ukrainian soldier Serhiy received a bionic prosthetic arm
On February 24, 2022, he volunteered to defend his country — first by joining the Territorial Defense Forces, and later the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“I went to the enlistment office on my own, and from there I was immediately deployed to the front line,” he recalls. During a combat mission, Serhii sustained a severe injury. He and a fellow soldier were holding their position when intense shelling began.
“A mortar shell exploded very close. I felt a powerful blow — and realized that only one leg remained intact,” the soldier recounts.

Survival became his greatest battle. Serhii underwent multiple surgeries, lengthy treatment, and rehabilitation. A crucial source of strength was the support of his family and volunteers. “My wife was my biggest support. I am also deeply grateful to Techiia Foundation and Oleh Krot — they helped me receive a prosthesis. When I learned it was possible, I was overjoyed,” says the defender.
At first, using the bionic arm was difficult, but with the help of specialists and his own perseverance, Serhii quickly adapted. “They explained to me: no prosthesis can fully replace a real arm, but it makes active life possible again. I realized that the key is to train and keep working,” he shares.
Today, Serhii is discovering new horizons. He is actively involved in sports and plays amputee football.
“In Ukraine, a league has been created for veterans who have lost limbs. Those without a leg play in the field, and those without an arm become goalkeepers. I also play as a goalkeeper. For me, it’s not just a sport — it’s part of my rehabilitation,” he says.
Equally important for him is supporting his fellow soldiers who are only beginning their recovery journey. “When I see guys after amputations, I try to talk to them. I explain that life does not end. The most important thing is not to lose heart,” Serhii adds. And his story is a testament to resilience and inner strength. It reminds us that even after the hardest trials, one can find new purpose, return to an active life, and inspire others.
”Supporting veterans is one of the key missions of our organization. We must do everything to ensure that those who defend the country have a chance at a new life. Every story is proof that our support truly matters,” emphasizes Oleh Krot, founder of the Techiia Foundation.
