The soldier Oleksandr received a bionic prosthetic arm

The Techiia Foundation helped Ukrainian serviceman Oleksandr navigate the challenging journey of prosthetic rehabilitation after sustaining a severe injury on the frontline.

Oleksandr’s story, like that of thousands of other Ukrainians, changed after the full-scale invasion began. Until 2022, he was living an ordinary civilian life and working. In the autumn of that year, he was mobilized into the Armed Forces of Ukraine. After completing his training, Oleksandr joined a combat unit and was deployed to the frontline.

He sustained a severe injury in the Pokrovsk area. An enemy drone struck the position where Ukrainian soldiers were stationed. Oleksandr suffered serious injuries that resulted in an amputation. What followed was a long period of treatment and rehabilitation, as well as the need to learn how to live in a new reality.

The next important step was prosthetic rehabilitation. With the support of the Techiia Foundation, Oleksandr received a modern bionic prosthesis — an electronic hand that became not only a way to restore lost functionality, but also an opportunity to regain greater independence in everyday life.

“The greatest help was the electronic hand. I received it free of charge. It gave me the opportunity to return to a more or less normal life,” Oleksandr says.

Prosthetic rehabilitation became a challenge of its own. With the support of specialists at international prosthetics centers, Oleksandr gradually learned to control his new limb and perform everyday tasks he had once taken for granted. According to him, physical adaptation is only one part of the journey. It is equally important to accept the changes mentally and maintain the motivation to keep moving forward.

“You have to be mentally prepared. It is difficult at first, but then you get used to it and learn to do things all over again,” the serviceman says.

Today, Oleksandr is gradually returning to an active life. He does not plan to stop there and wants to continue serving in Ukraine’s Defense Forces — even if his future role is no longer on the frontline.

His story is about a difficult journey after a life-changing injury, but also about the possibility of regaining independence, rebuilding everyday skills, and moving forward. This is why the Techiia Foundation continues to support Ukrainian defenders on their path to recovery.
